Keeping the Writing Fire Alive: Create Momentum in Busy Times

Today, I’m going to show you how to keep your writing momentum alive, even when life gets busy.

Last week, I worked with two writing groups on just that—keeping up daily momentum despite busy schedules. One group was part of my Write Habit Booster and the other in my 90-Day Accelerator. Each group committed to writing daily for a 7-day streak. Despite packed schedules, they showed up and made fantastic progress.

But now, many of them are worried that now, a few days later, they’ll lose the momentum they’ve built.

And maybe you feel this way too—you’ve had a productive streak, but as soon as your schedule tightens you feel you’re going to lose what you had and build up apprehension and fear.

The fear of losing progress can lead to procrastination.

I’ve seen this mechanism again and again:

-> amazing momentum
-> fear of losing it
-> procrastination
-> less momentum

But with a few small adjustments, you can keep moving forward, no matter what.

Let’s dive into some simple steps you can take to keep going.

Step 1: Reduce Engagement, Not Momentum

Even if you can’t commit to full writing sessions, keep the habit alive with small, low-pressure tasks that stay manageable.

  • Set a timer for just 5–10 minutes and write whatever comes to mind. This could be journaling, brainstorming, or working on an outline. This counts as “writing”!
  • Break down tasks into very small steps. Instead of “work on the draft,” try “edit one paragraph” or “write two sentences.”
  • Journaling and small tasks can still move your work forward and keep you feeling that you’ve not lost your momentum.

Step 2: Celebrate Every Win, Big or Small

Acknowledging progress—even small steps—helps you stay motivated and reinforces the positive momentum feeling you’ve created.

  • Track each small accomplishment by crossing it off a list or marking it on a calendar (or sharing it with someone).
  • Reflect on what you achieved each evening, even if it’s a small amount. This helps you end your day with a sense of accomplishment
  • Trust that every action, however small, is moving you forward!

Staying in momentum doesn’t mean writing full time; it’s about staying connected to your writing in ways that fit your life.

With these simple adjustments, you can keep progressing and feeling confident that you are still “in momentum”, no matter how busy things get.
