Today, you’ll find out when you should hire help to get your writing done (and when it’s a waste of your money).
Just a few weeks ago, I talked to a writer who I met half a year ago. Back then, she decided NOT to coach with me.
In fact, we both agreed that she should wait due to her (temporary) life circumstances.
This may sound surprising, but I don’t always offer my services when people ask. (And by the way, the client is now back and has time to use my hired help so much better).
Read on to find out help from a coach or editor is the right thing to do for you right now.
Signs that you are NOT READY
1. Lack of priority: If your project is not a #1 priority, don’t spend money on it. Your focus lies elsewhere right now, and that’s ok.
2. Lack of purpose: If publishing your project won’t change your career or life, I wouldn’t invest. Getting promoted after you publish a paper – that’s real purpose. Finding new better job with a publish book – that’s when you should hire help. You want to be sure you get a return on your investment.
3. Burnout: If you’re completely burned out, please go to your doctor. Yes, I can help you make more time to write and set better boundaries to protect you from burnout. But if you’re in the middle of it and wish you could just stop working and call in sick, that’s a sign. As a burnout survivor, I can help you find out where you stand, if you book a call with me.
I’ve turned away clients who would have been unhappy if they had coached with me at the wrong time.
When you SHOULD get help
1. Publishing is your top goal right now. You have an article, book, or grant proposal that absolutely must get submitted – and you’re willing to learn how to make space for it, ruthlessly. I can help you do this and the money will be well spent.
2. Publishing will change your life. If your promotion package needs one more paper or book, hire help and write faster. If you are on the job market and a big grant or more papers get you interviews, invest in yourself. You could probably do it alone, but you’ll have more job security and higher salary faster when you hire help now.
3. You have time and mental capacity to write. It’s ok to be overwhelmed and stressed out – I can help you reduce that. But you’ll have to be willing to engage in self-care and boundary-setting, so that writing gets some breathing space and becomes enjoyable again.
People who are ready to invest in their writing experience a massive boost in productivity immediately (and return on their investment laster). When you pay for a program for the right reasons, you raise the stakes and you will finish that project. And then you get your money’s worth.
If you are ready to finish a writing project this Fall, apply for my 90-Day Writing Accelerator. In our application call, we’ll talk through any questions you may have. And I won’t offer you a place if I’m not convinced I can help you get published.
Early enrolment with a super early bird discount is open for 2 more days (30 % off, 2 places left).
