Reignite Your Writing Spark After Life’s Interruptions

Today, I’m going to show you how to reignite your writing spark after life’s interruptions. Life has a way of throwing curveballs—illness, urgent work tasks, or unexpected distractions can pull you away from your writing projects. If you’re feeling frustrated and afraid that you might not return to your craft, you’re not alone.

I’m here to walk you through a compassionate and trusting approach to help you find your way back to writing.

By embracing a simple mindset shift, you can release stress and frustration, which is essential for rediscovering the joy and motivation to return to your writing projects.

The problem is that most people beat themselves up for taking breaks, adding unnecessary pressure that makes it even harder…

Don’t fight the pause; embrace it.

Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Give Yourself Compassion

Coaching Tip:

Do this with me right now… Take a deep breath, place your hand over your heart, and gently say to yourself, “It’s okay that I’m not always on top of things. I am human, and I deserve kindness.”

(My clients – and I – often start crying at this point, and that’s okay.)

Setbacks are part of every writer’s journey. Taking time off doesn’t diminish your talent or worth. Give yourself permission to “have been away” without guilt.

Step 2: Trust in Your Return

Coaching Tip:

Close your eyes and imagine your Future Self—”you” further down your timeline who has returned to writing and completed your projects. What words of encouragement does this Future You offer? Notice what comes up, or see if images appear.

(This can get emotional, and that’s okay.)

Remember, there were many past times when you bounced back after a break. Your ideas and inspiration are still within you, waiting patiently. Trust yourself that your return to writing will feel natural and exciting.

The first two steps above give you a mindset shift towards self-compassion and trust. And if that’s all you do today, you’ve made a shift right there!

When you’re ready, you can go deeper.

Step 3: Ease Back In Gently

Coaching Tip:

Close your eyes and visualise yourself in your favourite writing spot. Are you at your clean desk, a quiet library, or cosy café? Feel the pen in your hand or the keys beneath your fingers. Sense the warm, buzzing energy as words flow effortlessly.

And then, once you’ve got that self-compassion, trust, and have seen yourself writing happily – ONLY THEN think about starting with one tiny goal.

Gradually immersing yourself with gentle steps helps re-establish your writing habit with kindness and ease.
